St. Paul Classic Bike Tour earns Sustainable St. Paul Transportation Options Award.

The Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour attracts more than 7,000 riders annually to the city’s bike-friendly system of streets and trails, exposing individuals to options beyond driving. The tour, set for September 7, strives to have an impact beyond the one-day event by educating all participants on opportunities to get involved with environmentalism and to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives. The mission of the producer, the Neighborhood Energy Connection, is to “reduce pollution, conserve resources, and improve quality of life by offering tools for energy-efficient living.” Their efforts have earned them the Sustainable Saint Paul Transportation Options Award.

Organizers work to ensure the Bike Classic is sustainable by minimizing the event’s negative environmental impact. Participants are encouraged to explore the solar trailer that supplies power to the live bands and emcee at the main stage, the Energy Efficient Living tent, and visit with local exhibitors engaged in promoting energy-efficiency and bike-able communities.  At the event staging area and at every rest stop along the route, waste reduction educators are stationed with clear signage to assist riders with proper handling of their waste, recyclables, and compostable materials.

The broad reach of the event itself and the special activities that have been incorporated in the planning stages of the ride make the Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour particularly successful at achieving its mission.  The Bike Classic builds participants' awareness of Saint Paul's parks and open spaces, increases individuals’ connection with nature, expands cyclists' familiarity with the entire city, explores local businesses, practices safe cycling habits in a urban setting and lets participants discover all of the opportunities to get involved with environmentalism sustainable practices.

Riders enjoy beautiful scenery along the 15- and 30-mile courses while enjoying fresh, organic produce and baked goods from local shops. Local artists perform live. www.bikeclassic.org
