1 man. 2,174 miles. 47 days.

Ultra-runner Karl Meltzer set off on the biggest race of his life on Aug. 5. His challenge: to run the entire length of the 2,174-mile Appalachian Trail in less than 47 days.

The Web site www.whereskarl.com chronicles his progress and includes photographs and prolific posts from Karl and his helpers. Meltzer’s Appalachian Trail speed record attempt has not been without drama. Thus far, he contracted poison ivy and a case of trench foot, a condition caused by prolonged exposure to damp conditions, which have held him back a few days.

As of day 22 of his journey (Aug. 26), he had traversed only 675 of a projected 1,023 miles. If Karl does achieve his goal, he will finish the trek on Sept. 20. With his distance and elevation goals posted for supporters to see, it is up in the air as to whether he will succeed!
